Monday was a great day for me – I had been looking forward to the new season of The Amazing Race for months and couldn't wait to see some familiar faces return to race again.
My excitement increased ten fold however when I realised the first leg was set in Australia – Australian legs are always my favourites
I had also just received my brand new Veebeam HD box on the same day and got to try it out for the first time.
Veebeam allows you to stream video from your computer, laptop, the Internet or any where else directly to your TV – no need for wires or anything. This is a much better set up than the one I currently have that is so long winded and annoying I tend not to even bother watching shows in HD on the big screen and just sit in the cold spare room watching them on my little 19" tft instead!
The current set up I have involves hardwiring my computer to my fiances which means having wires running between rooms, setting up a network, sharing a folder that contains the files I want to watch, hardwiring my fiances computer to the TV (more wires running across rooms, ugh!), changing the input method on the TV, starting the file playing, dragging the media player to the TV and about 100 other little steps in between. It means having to have two computers and the TV on just to watch a simple show and if you want to pause or rewind or any thing else goes wrong you have to drag yourself up off the comfy sofa to the computer to take care of it.
So on Monday I cleared all my housework, did all my jobs online, got my work out in early, plugged my Veebeam box in and plonked down on the sofa with my slippers on and a nice cup of tea to enjoy the show
I had to download and install a small program which only took a few minutes – the Veebeam logo appeared on my TV screen, I plugged the Veebeam dongle into my laptop, it found and connected to it and I was ready to go. The Amazing Race in high definition on the big screen – Perfect.
I was impressed at how easy it was to get going, I was impressed at how there was no buffering and the episode played smoothly from start to finish because we all know how annoying it is when the video stops playing just as Jeff Probst is about to snub out someones fire, or Heidi Klum is about to 'Auf' someone, right? I also loved that I could continue to use my laptop at the same time without it causing any interference or slow down.
The only downside I have found with Veebeam is the limited range, this is of course an issue with most modern gadgets that rely on wireless technology however. Because the dongle and TV need to be in the same room for Veebeam to work, in order to get the files I want to watch off of my computer I still need to run them through a network to my laptop first – if only it had the power to work through one interior wall it would be absolutely perfect for me. Some of the reviews I have read for Veebeam actually say that it does work through walls for them, so maybe if I keep trying I will get lucky – fingers crossed.
As well as being able to watch files already on your computer, Veebeam can simply display your desktop on the TV so that you can browse the Internet, view photos, listen to music, play games or stream shows from sites like this one, Youtube or the various TV catchup services like iPlayer and 4oD.
If you like the sound of it you can Buy it now for £139 from Amazon or the official Veebeam website and start to Stream on your TV without wires and without hassle

**Update – Everything should be working fine again now
**
Just a quick one to say I am aware a few things are not working as they should be at the moment, for example if you click into a category it is not actually sorting the posts. This was caused when I upgraded the software the site runs on (wordpress) earlier today. I am working on fixing it and hopefully all kinks will be ironed out soon.
In the meantime if you need to find a post you should be able to do so using the search box (there’s one top right and also bottom left on the bar).
Thanks.
